Late Filing Penalties
Prior to 2010 Britain's tax system had a problem: Lots of citizens weren't payng on time.
For years H.M.Revenue and Customs had sent letters to the late payers, using traditional
warnings of interest charges, late fees, and legal action to try and get people to send
in their Returns and tax payments. Some complied, but many didn't and following a pilot study
in 2009 a new penalty regime was introduced.
If a Return us submitted one day late, a penalty of £100 is charged. This applies even
if you have no tax to pay or have already paid the tax you owe.
Once a Return is three months late the penalty is £10 for each following day - up to a 90
day maximum of £900. This is as well as the £ 100 fixed penalty above.
Where a Return form is six months late a further penalty of £300 or 5% of the tax due is applied,
whichever is the higher. This is in addition to the penalties above.
For Returns that are one year late the penalty becomes an additional £300 or 5% of the tax due,
whichever is the higher and in some cases people may be asked to pay up to 100% of the tax due instead.
In some instances the penalties can be even higher than this and these amounts are additional to the
one day, three month and six month penalties above.
If you need to file late tax tax Return forms you may also use this
service for the years ended 5th April, 2014,
2015 and 2016 for a fee of £ 390 per annum
by providing the same information and a note of the year(s) it relates to.
If forms are required for three years or more the fee will only be
£ 1170 in total as there is an administrative saving.
Since my fees are paid direct by you, any tax refund
you claim will be sent direct to you by HM Revenue and Customs.
My fee is payable by credit card online via this
